The Fort Ord coastal dunes are home to some of the area’s most sensitive plant and animal species. This illustrated panel depicts sand gilia, Monterey spineflower, Smith’s blue butterfly, western snowy plover, and the California legless lizard.
Firing Range 8 was the largest and most heavily used of the Beach Ranges at Fort Ord at Monterey Bay, California. Hundreds of thousands of infantry soldiers trained here at Fort Ord from World War II to through the Persian Gulf War. Photos illustrate this educational display board.
The trailside display explains that here are the waters of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, a federally protected marine area covering 6,094 square miles of ocean. The Sanctuary’s waters support some of the world’s most diverse marine ecosystems and an astonishing variety of life.
The Monterey Bay Sanctuary Scenic Trail is a biking and walking route and, when completed, will link local, regional, and state-sponsored trails, like the California Coastal Trail, into a continuous corridor along the Monterey Bay coast and beyond. A map on this trailside display shows sights along the way.
