Green sea turtles play a critical part in Samoan Culture and must be protected. The watercolor panel depicts a large and several young turtles and tells the story of its journey in both Samoan and English.
This educational message shows a watercolor painting of a humpback whale accompanied by three sonograms showing the “look” of the whale song. We don’t know why it signs but perhaps it is to defend territory, attract female turtles, or to keep family groups together over long distances.
This educational sign tells you that the delicious Palolo worms spawn Polynesian Pacific waters once a year and you should catch and eat them right away. The panel gives you a recipe for how to prepare them.

The Challenge:

To create displays in a language, culture, and ecosystem new to us. We needed local scientists, translators, and people familiar with ancient customs to help with research. We also needed a Samoan committee leader to make sure communications went smoothly and to help locate relevant photos and historical accounts.

The Result:

A set of panels installed on the beach near government buildings in Pago Pago as a way to introduce tourists to some of the country’s ecological issues.
